Mending Techniques with Heidi Iverson & Allison Reilly

July 16, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

$210

Event Navigation

Join us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station, CA, where you will learn how to mend both woven and knitted garments using a variety of stitches and techniques.

Our samplers will be created using naturally dyed fabric and thread. For the woven textile portion, you will make a sampler that will be transformed into a mending pouch to keep supplies in. For the knitted portion, you will create a sampler on a machine-knit piece of fabric similar to the weight of a sock or lightweight sweater.

In this class, you will learn:

  • How to assess damage
  • Best practices to preserve the fabric without causing more damage
  • How to make a patchwork
  • How to use a palm thimble
  • A variety of stitches: running, blanket, whip, basting, lacing, eyelet, tambourine, honeycomb and back stitch.
  • Depending on the time, there are additional stitches.
  • How to properly sew on a button
  • Using a speed-weave loom, darning egg, and embroidery hoop
  • Different approaches to fixing sweaters and other knit garments
  • How to take care of your favorite garments and extend their life

Materials included:

  • Fabric swatches, thread and yarn — both cellulose and protein fibers
  • A pdf with the information we go over in classA pattern for a Japanese knot bag

Please bring:

  • Personal snacks, lunch and beverages (a selection of teas will be served)
  • One to two garments or textiles — Heidi and Allison will advise you on how to mend/darn your garment/textile.
