Learn classic weaving techniques using locally-harvested natural materials

Join us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station, to learn how to make baskets with tule, a beautiful natural material harvested on the ranch.

The variety of tule we are using is Schoenoplectus acutus, a giant species of sedge, native to freshwater marshes. Tules are used to make rope, baskets, bowls, mats, hats, clothing, duck decoys, and even boats by Native people.

Rimiko Berreman will be teaching classic weaving styles used by different cultures, through hands-on instruction and handouts for you to take home with your woven creations.

More than just learning how to weave, this workshop explains the process of connecting with the land and the plants, sustainable harvesting, different techniques of weaving, and creating baskets and other items.

Tuition Scholarships & Transportation/Childcare Stipends
Fibershed is offering two scholarships to most workshops; one scholarship if it’s a small class. In addition to scholarships for tuition, we are offering a limited number of stipends for transportation and/or childcare. If you would not otherwise be able to attend, and would like to be considered as a scholarship and/or stipend recipient, please answer a few brief questions on this Google Form. Responses will be reviewed by Learning Center staff and kept strictly confidential.

The instructor: Rimiko Berreman was born and grew up in Tokushima, a small city in the Shikoku region of Japan, surrounded by Japanese artisan crafts including Aizome (indigo), traditional woodworking, carving, as well as weaving with natural materials. She was involved in local industry programs in her twenties and one of her early jobs was sewing products including Sashiko and Shibori at the Indigo studio in Tokushima. Those were great opportunities for her to learn these traditional skills. She continues creating things using multiple media. Visit rimikoart.com and instagram.com/rimikoart to see more of Rimiko’s work.

Clothing Swap ClosetBONUS: The Clothing Swap Closet is now open during workshops and events at the Fibershed Learning Center!

Visit the Clothing Swap Closet when you attend a workshop or event at the Learning Center and exchange your natural fiber garments and accessories. Your clothing contributions must be clean and in good condition. Each contribution entities you to choose one item of comparable value.

You may arrive up to 30 minutes early for the workshop you are attending, and/or depart up to an hour after the workshop ends, to allow time to browse and try on items in the closet, and make your trade!
